Getting Permission Isn't Necessary Any More.
As you were growing up, your parents taught you to ask for permission. Around the dinner table you were told to ask for the person next to you to "pass the salt" instead of lunging across the table for it. Instead of running down the street to play with the new neighbors who just moved into town, your mom made you ask her "if it was okay" before you left the house.
A lot of life for many years required you to ask for permission.
At school. In sports. At church, camp, and your local library. Everything was about getting permission before you made a mistake that might have consequences for you.
That didn't change when you left your house and school and church and went off to college. You still found yourself asking for permission. From professors. From teammates. From the person living with you in your dorm room. From your date, your friends, and your fraternity.
Permission. Permission. Permission.
Before you did anything, you made sure you had approval from the right person.
And if you were expecting that trend to change when you left college, you found yourself sadly mistaken. At your first job you found yourself asking for permission for just about everything.
When to eat your lunch. When you could go on vacation. When to get things done. Who to work with. What type of font to use in your report. You needed permission for just about anything
It's easy to think of life as being about you needing permission. That's how you were raised. That's how you were taught.
So why isn't that working out for you now?
Why do you feel trapped in a situation where the person you need permission from seems to be holding you back?
You asking for permission seems to be the difference between doing something incredibly amazing and just going through the motions.
That's because the time for permission is over. The time for asking if it's okay to be awesome is passed. You don't need approval, permission, or an excuse to follow your dreams.
You own you. Your destiny. Your dreams. Your goals.
The reason you feel frustrated, held back, and angry is because you've waited a little too long to stop asking for permission. You've followed the rules a little too long. You've toed the line a little too long. You've done what is expected of you for a little too long.
But it's not too late to change that. Today is the day to break the rules. To stop asking for permission. To stop caring what other people think about your journey. You're going to anger some people because you have the guts to do something amazing without looking to them for approval.
You're going to offend some people by not asking for their permission.
But the truth is that living your life on someone else's terms is no way to live your life at all. It's a miserable train wreck.
You know that. That's why you're feeling like it's time for a change.
So change. Do what you want to do. Be the person you imagine you could be.
Stop asking for permission.
