Their Rules Are Bad.

Right now, the decisions you make are a result of what you believe in. Whether you realize it or not, you're playing by a set of rules.

And they're probably not your rules.

Chances are, you've never defined the rules. You never even thought about the rules before.

You just accept the idea that the rules are helpful to you.

After all, you've been told that the rules are what keep society orderly. If anyone could just murder, rape, steal, and plunder at will, then having a successful business and a predictable lifestyle would be impossible.

Happiness would be impossible.

So, in a certain sense, rules deliver happiness.  But only when you set the rules.

That's because whoever makes the rules is happiest.

Feudal kings understood this concept a thousand years ago when they oppressed the masses to enrich their own personal lifestyles.  Manufacturing mavens borrowed these ideas a few hundred years later, building sweatshops that produced low-cost generic goods at the expense of basic human dignity.  Today, politicians manipulate our emotions to create self-serving initiatives that keep themselves employed and positioned as "being right".

They set the rules.

Which brings up the most important realization you need to make.

To be happy you have to change the rules.

The rules don't benefit you.  They benefit the people who made them in the first place.

Frankly, they slow down your business.  They drive revenue to your competitors, and they step all over your creativity.

But you can't just change the rules right away.

You have to change the conversation.

You have to convince people that the safety of the rules isn't really safety at all.  That security at the expense of creativity isn't a good trade.

The rules in your industry are what is slowing you down.  The jargon, the acronyms, the buzzwords, the way things are done right now -- if you didn't create it, it's out to hurt you.

Change it.
