CONFLICT...

(For most of us, a shiver just went down our spine...)

How many management books have been written about how to appease employee personality conflicts or how for management to avoid conflict, change conflict, harness conflict (I like that one...), reduce chances of conflict, overcome conflict, successfully negotiate conflict, blah, blah, blah...?

My Amazon.com search for books on conflict turned up 401,572 results...on all these topics...and more...

How about this concept - HOW TO CREATE CONFLICT?

Think outside the business world for a moment. As primal humans, we LOVE conflict! Disagree with me?

  • Do you watch football?
  • Ever compete in an athletic event?
  • How many elections have you voted in?
Face it. We do love conflict. But more than loving conflict, we love TRIUMPH through CONFLICT... A la Remember the Titans, a la Rudy, a la CONFLICT...

I think it is fair to make a connection between CONFLICT and INSPIRATION...

AGREE? (I do...)

Nothing worthwhile gets done without conflict. We know that diamonds are created under intense pressure - conflict. We know that the best athletes train the hardest - conflict. We know that learning comes from a combination of intellectual stimuli versus life experience - conflict.

If conflict can create so many POSITIVE things, I am left wondering why we as executives (humans, leaders, etc...) avoid to the point of frantic hysteria anything that even slightly resembles CONFLICT.

This has a lot to do with head games. We have been trained that CONFLICT is BAD!

  • Our mothers tell us to "get along with your siblings"...
  • Our bosses encourage us to "work as a team"...

CONFLICT HAPPENS...

IT BUILDS US!
IT MAKES US BETTER!
